Kinders and Farming

At Old McDonald's Farm in Corbett

At Old McDonald’s Farm in Corbett

This fall, our kindergarteners have been asking themselves the questions: What is a farm? What is a farmer? What does a farmer do? To answer these questions, they have conducted a lot of hands-on learning!

In September, a representative from Franz Bakery came into the classroom to

teach how bread is made. Soon thereafter, the kinders traveled to their garden plot on the campus of the National University of Natural Medicine to harvest wheat planted by last year’s class. In October, the class journeyed to Zenger Farms in SE Portland to learn about plants and vegetable farming. They also had the opportunity to engage in some on-site service work. Also in October, students traveled to Lee Farms in Tualatin to pick out pumpkins and to Old McDonald’s Farm in Corbett to get an inside peek into animal farming. They were able to learn about how farmers raise goats, cows, sheep, chickens, pigs and horses.

As a culminating celebration before Thanksgiving break, the class feasted on pumpkin pie with their families. Students helped to prepare the ingredients by grinding the wheat used in the crust and cleaning and cutting the pumpkin meat for the filling. Yum!

4th and 5th Grade Thank You Cards

As we all know, transportation can be a challenge for our fieldwork program especially when we are traveling far afield. We are so grateful to Steve Tinney and Ankrom Moisan Architects, Inc. for sponsoring a bus rental to transport our 4th/5th graders to the Columbia River Maritime Museum in December. This is an amazing support to us. Our teachers, parents and students deeply appreciate their sponsorship!
