Seventh graders write letters, start petition to ban smoking in public parks

The 7th grade students in Sarah Anderson’s class are participating in a class room assignment called Project Citizen where students work together to identify a public policy issue in their community and develop an action plan for local government leaders to use in addressing the issue. The work culminates with a class portfolio that can be part of a state and national showcase.

Their class project focuses on a formal push for a citywide smoking ban in Portland public parks. According to Anderson, the students have the support of State Rep. Mitch Greenlick and have contacted the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. The class started an online petition as well.
